Tip of Week ribbon

Jack - Takura QLD    Tip of the Week - Week Ending 04 Jul 2009

If you get hungry between meals, have a glass of water. This doesn't have to be boring. Try adding a few slices of lime, lemon or other citrus fruit. In season now, they add a great subtle taste. For more zing, add a little squeezed juice with the slices. If you enjoy fizzy drinks, use soda water, you can make your own or buy it cheaply from the supermarket...deliciously refreshing. Once you've had a drink, you will probably find you were actually thirsty and not hungry at all... My grandchildren prefer their home made fizzy dinks to commercial soft drink.

When it's wet or too dark outside,I put on my favourite dance tunes and boogie in the lounge room for 15 - 20 minutes.

By planning meals for the week or fortnight, and doing a bigger shop you can avoid buying those extra little things that get us if we go to the supermarket to "just get a couple of things for dinner". Plus there's not as much fresh food wastage if we plan well.

Ange - O'connor ACT

Every time I want to eat, I try picking up fruit, a healthy vegetable or nuts rather than food laced with tons of sugar and fat.

Jess - Canberra ACT

Expend energy to get your food like a traditional hunter-gatherer. Leave the car at home- walk/cycle to the supermarket or markets with a backpack and green bags, restricting your time spent at the supermarket to getting only the things you need. For me the return trip it's a decent workout of just over an hour. Makes more sense than driving to the gym and then to the supermarket, which a. saves money, b. reduces greenhouse gas emissions and c.is done in about the same duration of time.

m cole - elizabeth north SA

Only have healthy snacks to eat when you get the munchies. That way you will feel less guilty and eat healthier.

trudy page - lower chittering WA

when cooking your chicken add a splash of balsamic vineger it gives it a nice winey italian flavour without all the calories

Julie - Baxter VIC

Make sure you have healthy snacks ready (fruit, carrot sticks, celery, capsicum chunks etc). Until you have your eating under control... leave the lollies at the supermarket.

Kate Ryan - Nambour QLD

I find my meals are more satisfying if I take a little extra time to make them special. This could be adding some ice cubes and lemon juice to my glass of water, garnishing my plate or lighting candles. This also makes me eat slower, and savour my food, which has the bonus of letting me know when I'm full. It's very easy to eat too much if you're eating quickly, as your stomach doesn't send the full signal immediately.

S Lee - Padstow NSW

Make water interesting...mix with your favourite cordial to start off with. Once you get used to drinking 6-8 cups a day, substitute the cordial with regular water until you are drinking the 6-8 cups each day
